Ramana Music

1. What is ‘Ramana Sangitam’ or ‘Ramana Music’?

‘Ramana Sangitam’ is a vast body of music encompassing many streams and styles of the music of India. It may be defined as comprising primarily of:
a) All the poetic works of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi in their original Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Sanskrit set to music.
b) All/or a major part of the poetic works on Bhagavan Ramana by spiritual giants like Ganapati Muni, Muruganar and others soaked in the Ramana experience, set to music.
c) The poetic and musical compositions not only of those contemporaneous with Bhagavan but of ‘Post-Nirvana’ devotees as well.
d) Translations of all the above by eminent poets into Kannada, Telugu, Hindi and English, and also a few in Gujarati, Marathi and Malayalam, all set to music.

2. What is the purpose of Ramana Sangitam?

To make the ‘Ramananubhavam’ (‘the Experience of Ramana’) that is crystallized in these poems, available to more and more people.
Because, the simplest way to convey a truth is through a song, that is why the greatest truths are found in poetic form.
Each of the works in Ramana Sangitam and in particular every one of Bhagavan’s poems, has potent mantras imbedded in it. These works have the power to transform life and bestow the highest good. So they have been introduced to the music world (both to singers, right from beginners, and to listeners as well).
The surest way to remember something is to sing it. Therefore, what better way to communicate the highest truths in the poems of Bhagavan and on Him, rather than to sing them?

Manavasi Ramaswamy Iyer one of the important composers of songs on Ramana is actually the Ramana Sangeetha Pitamaha as he was the first one to compose songs with tune on Ramana.

The contribution of Sri A.R. Natarajan in encouraging his wife in singing Ramana Music from then on, is immeasurable.

Later Prof. K. Swaminathan author of ‘Ramana Maharshi’ NBT Publication, was instrumental in making Smt. Sulochana Natarajan dive deep into Sri Muruganar’s Ramana Sannidhi Murai.

Then followed her research in the other Ramana Music Composer’s works paying homage to them by singing their compositions in Ramananjali .

The World of Ramana Music
Bhagavan Ramana’s grace brought the Ramananjali leader Smt. Sulochana Natarajan in a very special musical family in order to be an instrument in spreading Ramana Music. All the intense training in Carnatic Classical Music in her early years and the total exposure to the same was to fructify in the full unique formation of Ramana Sangeetham. Her first Guru in Ramana Music was Manavasi Ramaswamy Iyer who spotted her at Sri Ramanasramam, Tiruvannamalai in front of the sanctum sanctorum of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi five decades back in 1956 and taught her ‘Ariyataramamo’ first and then his special miracle song ‘SARANAGATI’.
